An exhibition of Portrait Photography
by local photographer Sylvain Guenot
Stroud’s Lansdown Gallery will be showing a remarkable exhibition “In Action: the Virtuosity of Presence” by Stroud based, International portrait photographer Sylvain Guenot.
Having recently returned from working in Hong Kong, Sylvain is offering a rare opportunity to view an exhibition featuring portraits of over forty renowned New York-based dancers and choreographers, many highly acclaimed throughout the world of dance. Shown in New York in 2013, this stunning collection of intimate portraits captures the virtuosity of the dancers.
Stroud portrait photographer Sylvain Guenot was invited to capture a cross-section of the diverse and talented NYC dance community. For this project, Sylvain worked in close collaboration with Whitney V Hunter, New York-based interdisciplinary performance artist, who was a performer with the world-class Martha Graham Dance Company.
The resulting exhibition, InAction: the Virtuosity of Presence is a collection of portraits of dancers from the world famous to the emerging artist.Working with Whitney, the portraits were gathered through the network of dance artists during two visits to New York. The project was made personally significant as on both occasions Sylvain was accompanied by his son, Paul, who was envisaging a career in dance. Following a successful work experience there, Paul was invited to participate in a summer school at the Martha Graham Dance School in New York. Paul is currently training at The Northern Contemporary Dance School in Leeds
Rather than photographing the dancers in action, Sylvain set himself the challenge of capturing and expressing the virtuosity of the artists removed from their performance environment. The portraits were taken in private environments, taking great care to use minimal external elements as subtle tools for composition and artistic insight. Focusing solely on the presence of the dancer, this poignant series of large-format prints reveals a window into the heart and mind of the artist.
Sylvain is delighted to announce that local jazz singer, Neil Patterson will be performing at The Private View which opens on Monday March 2nd, 7-9pm. The exhibition will continue to run until March 15th.
