Visage is the name of an exhibition by Stroud based artist Keith Symonds, who will be showing numerous oil paintings and pencil drawings of mainly local people in his first solo show for four years.
Keith has become increasing fascinated by portraiture and has built monthly, clothed portrait sessions into his programme of study at Stroud Life Drawing, the twice weekly classes he runs at The Centre for Science & Art. He says, ‘attempting to capture the likeness of a sitter is tricky but it can also be very rewarding’.
In addition to the portraits, the exhibition will also include a series of nudes, painted during the enforced lockdown of 2020. Keith’s working method begins with a pencil drawing of the sitter/model and this study is then used as a reference when painting in oils. Careful observation is fundamental to the process and many of original pencil studies will be framed and on show. Additionally, Keith’s portfolios of life drawings will also be on display for visitors to enjoy.
